How good can Phaneuf be in Toronto?

Phaneuf a hit with Leaf fans and his girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert, is another reason to like him
He hits like a bus. He shoots to score with a heavy shot. He is very mobile for a big man. He is capable of logging lots of ice-time, playing in all situations.

Last night, Dion Phaneuf reminded everyone why he is a two-time All-Star in the NHL. He even won a spirited fight in the first period.

The Leafs rode the emotion of the debut of three new players to a resounding 3-0 win over the Devils.

That’s not the big story though.

The important news is that the Leafs may have found their new leader. Not since the departure of Mats Sundin, has anyone stood out as a real leader on the Leafs. Nor has anyone seemed capable of being that marquee-type of player.

By all accounts, Phaneuf, who appears reserved in media interviews, was also a dynamic presence in the dressing room. Coach Ron Wilson noted that the music was loud in the dressing room and Phaneuf’s voice could be heard above all others.

Considering that he is one of the new guys in the room, this early impact is setting a positive tone for a new era in Toronto.

For one rare night this season, there was a buzz around this team. The players held a players’ only meeting earlier in the day, aimed at refocusing this group for the balance of the season.

It won’t be long before another lingering issue around this club is resolved.

Dion Phaneuf is going to be the next captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
